Tell us about your idea process

My design process for this project began by going through materials I could reuse from my own studio. I discovered some intensely colored cargo straps from a previous project where they had been used to transport a large installation. I've always enjoyed exploring what might be considered "ugly" in my work and transforming it into something beautiful.

The bench came to life through a sculptural process, which is my usual approach. The visual appeal and unique feel of the straps guided the design. After thoroughly washing and drying the used straps, I tested a few weaving patterns before finalizing the plan for assembly. I then modified the bench frame with an angle grinder. Once the frame was ready, the work of weaving the straps together began. To highlight the material's original function, I added a backrest where the tensioning mechanism is clearly visible.

Where did you get the materials from?

The cargo straps are made from durable synthetic materials, and their longevity gives them a sustainable value. Through this choice of material, the bench becomes an illustration of the power of reuse. To supplement the straps I already had, I found several similar ones of the same size and material on Finn.no, where I got in touch with a company that sells used straps. To ensure the bench could safely support the weight of people, the seat was reinforced using some leftover wood panels from a previous project.

In what ways do you incorporate sustainability or reuse into your work?

Reuse has a natural focus in my projects. In a time where sustainability and eco-friendly practices are becoming increasingly important, clients are looking for innovative ways to reuse materials and concepts. Since I rarely throw out leftover materials after a production, I've built up a large inventory of materials and props. I usually use this as the starting point of a design process to see what we can create. It's limiting, but in many ways, it simplifies the idea process when not every option is available during the development of a concept.
