The design for this project came directly from my encounter with the materials I used. Over the past few months, I had come across both the yellow floor plates and the solid wood blocks, and they both immediately impressed me—not just because they were interesting materials, but because I had access to a large quantity of them. I hadn't, however, envisioned using the two in combination.

When I was invited by Studio M3 to participate, I quickly saw a great opportunity to experiment with them. The final bench brings together these very different materials, and their contrasts perfectly suit the exhibition's playful and open format.

Where did you get the materials from?

In addition to the frame, I have combined two other materials in my project: cut-offs of floor plates from a fishing boat and leftover glulam beams from the assembly of a solid wood building in Southern Norway.

These floor plates, or "grating" as it's called, are used as decking on fishing boats and supply vessels. The plates are from a crab fishing boat that was docked for maintenance at the Laksevåg shipyard in Bergen. Earlier this summer, we used the same plates for set design at JoyJoy a music festival I help organize in the old industrial buildings there every year. I've since thought it would be fun to work with these in a piece of furniture, and this is the first opportunity I've had to experiment further.

The glue laminated blocks were donated to the project by Alexander Lien, one of my many friends at Massiv Lust. They design and assemble buildings from glulam and solid wood panels. There is generally very little waste on these projects, but the block I received was used as a spacer during the transport of elements for a project designed by BGM Arkitekter in Bortelid, in the deep inland of Agder County.

In what ways do you incorporate sustainability or reuse into your work?

Sustainability is linked to quality, and I am committed to quality as a core principle in my work. My goal is to create furniture and objects that function well and are built to last.

Furthermore, I believe that a certain uniqueness also plays an important role in the objects we become attached to. Elements like identity, history, or a distinctive expression are what make us choose to take care of things. I hope my work can be experienced as more than just purely functional.
