My vision for the bench was completely solid until I stumbled upon an accordion in a thrift store in mid-August. Though I first intended to follow my original blueprint of using leftover materials from a renovation, I quickly saw that the plan would have to be adapted once I had the new materials in hand. This shift toward a greater focus on reusing items suddenly revealed a host of exciting new options I was eager to explore.
The materials for this project come from a variety of places. I sourced the birchwood from Nesodden about a year ago, and used parts from an old accordion I found at .Grei Handel in Hønefoss. The bench also includes limpet shells from the Orkney Islands, flint from Denmark, and some leftover aluminum from an earlier project.
Reuse is a central part of my practice, both as a source of materials, aesthetics, and inspiration. I reuse raw materials, and parts of my own projects. Many of my works are modular and are built from several smaller components. This allows installations to be adapted to different surroundings and also makes them easier to store. The parts often migrate into new projects, thus getting a new life at the conclusion of the previous one.
